Waterline installation to close one eastbound lane of Main

The Norman Utilities Authority (NUA) will begin installation of a new waterline on Main Street on Monday. The project will begin at James Garner, west of the railroad, and progress west toward Park Avenue in one block sections. The first section of the project will proceed from James Garner to Santa Fe. The waterline installation, and associated street and sidewalk repair, is expected to be completed in May, if weather cooperates.

The waterline installation will require the northern-most eastbound lane of Main Street, as well as the adjacent parking to the north, to be closed. The lane closures will be in 500 foot sections and move to the west as the waterline installation and pavement repairs are completed.

Work on the project will generally be between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. Driveways to businesses within the work zone will be backfilled with gravel each night to allow access; however, traffic control within the work zone will remain in place.

There will be occasions throughout the project when sections of Main Street will be closed to through traffic overnight as waterlines are installed across Main. The night-time closures would begin at 7 p.m. and reopen by 7 a.m.

The new PVC waterline replaces an aged iron ductile line that was originally installed over 40 years ago. The old line has experienced ruptures and leakages.

A second phase of the waterline installation project will proceed from Park Avenue to Flood Avenue and is expected to be complete in mid-August, depending on weather.
