Quiet Zone, Safe Zone Event Set for Saturday

The City of Norman and the Norman Public Library will host an educational event about railroad track and crossing safety this Saturday. The event called Quiet Zone, Safe Zone is from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Lowry Room of the library at 225 N. Webster.

Mayor Lynne Miller will kick off the event where residents will have an opportunity to learn about the three E’s of rail safety: engineering, enforcement and education. City of Norman Transportation Engineer Angelo Lombardo will present information about engineering including the safety measures required of the City in order to qualify for the recently implemented quiet zone.

Captain Shawn Hawkins will provide information and answer questions about Norman Police Department’s enforcement efforts near railroad tracks.

Charles Ellison with Operation Lifesaver will share train safety educational materials for adults and children. Children will have a special story time before joining Ellison’s presentation.

Operation Lifesaver is a nonprofit public safety education and awareness organization dedicated to reducing collision incidents and decreasing the likelihood of injuries and fatalities on and around railroad tracks. For more information about their programs, visit
