Public Invited to Community Visioning Workshop

The City of Norman is hosting a Community Visioning Workshop as part of the comprehensive plan process for the city. The public is invited to attend the event which is Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Norman High School Conference Center Multipurpose Room.

The comprehensive plan is a physical plan and policy guide for Norman and serves as a framework for future planning documents as well as a policy guide for staff and decision makers. The update to Norman 2025 Plan will prepare the city for the next 20 years.

MIG, the company that is developing the comprehensive plan, will provide a poster gallery with images and information about existing Norman at the Open House from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Immediately following the Open House, MIG will present a Community Profile and will facilitate a discussion of Norman’s vision and values.

Norman High School is located at 911 W. Main.

The current Norman 2025 Land Use and Transportation Plan was adopted December 16, 2004. It was an update to the 2020 Land Use and Transportation Plan that was adopted in 1997. Best planning practices call for update or complete revision of the Comprehensive Plan every 10 years or if critical growth issues arise. The City of Norman has not updated the Comprehensive Plan in 12 years and the City has seen sizable growth since 2004. The population has grown from 105,336 to 117,523 and the City has seen an additional 2000 acres of land developed.

During the last ten years multi-family housing units have increased dramatically, primarily to serve the student population. Norman’s growth over the last 10 years has spurred the development of associated plans needed to address the growth in several crucial areas including stormwater, water supply, parks, open space and transportation.

Norman City Council approved the contract with MIG at its March 22, 2016 council meeting. MIG was founded in 1982 and focuses on planning, designing and sustaining environments that support human development.
