Job Description
Duties: 
Starts and stops commercial and residential water customer service by turning on and off water valves. Removes meters for delinquent accounts. Organizes and schedules route to obtain the most efficient sequence of conducting service calls. Utilizes tact and caution when approaching residents where the customer is hostile because their water is being cut-off due to delinquent payments. Removes and replaces water meters. Cleans water meters on assigned routes and records readings on hand held computer as needed. Re-reads meters that have been misread by Water Meter Readers and reads manual and automated meters. Operates city automobile or pick-up truck on various routes; follows safety guidelines and regulations; refuels and maintains cleanliness of vehicle. Prepares complaints against customers for illegal tampering with water meter by photographing water meter box, collecting evidence and completing forms. Enters meter reading data, maintains electronic files, and generates reports. Answers customer questions regarding water meter readings. Performs other related work as required.
Working Conditions: 
Frequent exposure of up to 80% of work time to dirt, dust, and extremes of temperature.
Job Requirements
Education and Experience: 
High School diploma or equivalent. Six months to one year related experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge: 
City of Norman geography and major streets. Ability to read, understand and follow written and verbal instruction in order to operate meter reading equipment. Recording and report preparation.
Skills: 
Reading a city map. Interpersonal skills necessary to be courteous of fellow employees, citizens and businesses while performing repair and maintenance duties. Using a computer to enter data and generate reports.
License and/or Certification: 
Valid state driver’s license and satisfactory motor vehicle record. Must obtain a Class D Water License within six months of employment.
Mental & Physical: 
Heavy mobility; duties are usually performed by frequent walking and/or standing, kneeling, or squatting relieved by lesser periods of sitting or operating vehicle. Good vision is required, either uncorrected or corrected through the use of lens. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail. Ability to lift moderately (25-50 lb.) heavy items on a frequent basis. Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance.
