A PROCLAMATION OF THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NORMAN, OKLAHOMA, PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 15 THROUGH OCTOBER 15, 2009, AS HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH IN THE CITY OF NORMAN.

§ 1. WHEREAS, Norman is home to people whose ancestry represents hundreds of nations, including Mexico, Spain, the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and Spain; and

§ 2. WHEREAS, September 15th is the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries; Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua; and

§ 3. WHEREAS, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th and September 18th, respectively; and

§ 4. WHEREAS, Hispanic Americans have contributed to our prosperity and culture throughout the history of Norman, the State of Oklahoma, and our country; and

§ 5. WHEREAS, the University of Oklahoma has a long and proud commitment to attracting students and scholars of Hispanic heritage and is home to several Latino student organizations including the Hispanic American Student Association, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Hispanic American Law Student Association; Pan-American Student Association, Colombian Student Association, Peruvian Student Association, Bolivian International Student Association, Association of Friends of Venezuela, and Latino Greek Council as well as offering one of the country’s premier Latin American Studies programs with both a major and a minor in Latin American studies; and

§ 6. WHEREAS, the Norman Public Library will host the 7th Annual Norman Hispanic Festival on Sunday, October 4th, a free, public event that celebrates Hispanic heritage and culture, traditional Latin food, art, music, and dance; and

§ 7. WHEREAS, the City of Norman greatly values its relationship with its sister city, Colima, Mexico; and

§ 8. WHEREAS, it is appropriate to increase Hispanic cultural awareness and diversity by paying tribute to the valuable contributions made by Hispanic Americans to our business, cultural, and educational communities.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NORMAN, OKLAHOMA:

§ 9. Do hereby proclaim that September 15 through October 15, 2009, Hispanic Heritage Month in the City of Norman celebrating Hispanic culture, traditions, and achievements.
